The Afternoon Show Monday November 19th 2012

Joining Gavin Grace on The Afternoon Show today was Dr. Margaret Sheridan Pereira, a senior clinical lecturer in paediatrics at Trinity College and The Coombe.  They discussed a scientific report published today by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which highlights key recommendations to improve the nation’s baby feeding patterns and nutrition. Scientific Recommendations for a National Infant Feeding Policy in Ireland highlights a number of key concerns with current infant feeding trends and outlines specific actions and advice to improve the nutritional diet of mums-to-be and infants from birth to one year. Sue Egan from Shannon contacted the show to appeal for help. Sue is appealing for the public’s help in tracing a missing King Charles dog which she was minding for friends.  The dog vanished on Thursday and despite an extensive search and has not been seen since.  Sue believes the dog was taken and is hoping someone locally may know where the dog is. The dog’s owners are on holidays at the moment and Sue hopes the dog will be returned before they return home.

Adrian Cummins, the Chief Executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland also joined Gavin to discuss the RAI’s “Ten Point Plan to Protect Existing Employment, Create New Jobs and Ensure the Growth of the Restaurant Sector.” Adrian Cummins outlined the steps that need to be taken if the restaurant industry is to continue to survive and recover. Adrian says there is now a crisis in the shortage of chefs in the country, and an investment in training is needed. An immediate training fund needs to be made available to employers so that the huge demand for chefs of all grades can be met.
