The Afternoon Show – Monday November 12th 2012

On The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace spoke to Maeve Ryan, Service Co-coordinator for the Crime Victims Helpline. The National Crime Victims Helpline indicated today that it has been receiving a number of calls from people who have been duped into allowing strangers into their home. They then find that money and goods have been stolen after the ‘visitor’ has departed.  Highly publicised campaigns such as the recent TV changeover, and door-to-door fundraising campaigns, create opportunities for such visits and robberies. The national Helpline number is Free Phone 116 006. Email: [email protected].  The number for texts is 085 1337711

Mandy Johnston is the Communications Officer with the ILCU – the Irish League of Credit Unions. She spoke to Gavin about Christmas expense and what people are likely to spend this holiday season. Today the Irish League of Credit Unions launched its annual Christmas campaign. As part of the campaign, the ILCU will release the results of a survey into what the population are looking forward to most this year, where they will do the bulk of their shopping, how they will spend and how much debt they will incur. While Clare FM’s Doireann Wilde met with people on the streets to ask them about the expense they’ll incur over the festive season.

Kerry Councillor Seamus Cussey Fitzgerald also spoke to Gavin following reports that one of Ireland’s national treasures – Fungi the dolphin – had passed away.  The news which was reported on Twitter last night was in fact a hoax and the bottlenose dolphin was confirmed to be alive and well in the Dingle Peninsula!
