The Afternoon Show – Monday December 3rd 2012

On today’s Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Patrick Edmond, an Aviation Consultant with e2consul and a former General Manager (Commercial) with CityJet, to discuss today’s news regarding the separation of Shannon Airport from The Dublin Airport Authority. The government has made its long-awaited announcement on Shannon Airport, and it’s separation from the DAA. Details were announced at a press conference in Dublin today, held during an aviation convention – Patrick was in attendance.  He also worked with the task forces in drawing up this report.

Elaine Burke is a journalist with Silicon Republic.  She spoke to the show as today marks the 20th anniversary of the text message.  She and Gavin discussed whether or not the text message is on its last hurrah and also spoke about how Pope Benedict is to begin tweeting next week. The Vatican says the first tweets will be answers to questions sent to the Pope on matters of faith. The Pontiff will begin tweeting on December 12 with regular tweets sent in eight languages including English, French, German, Arabic and Polish.

Also joining Gavin in studio today was Susan Ward of Mid West Simon, Sharon Meaney from the Clare Volunteer Centre and Ann Loftus from Clarecare, to talk about a special week long event aimed at highlighting the valuable work carried out by volunteers in the county. Wednesday December 5th is International Volunteer Day. Clare Volunteer Centre and 5 of the charity shops in Ennis want to mark that and acknowledge the valuable role volunteers play. They are holding a Community Treasure Hunt during the week of December 3 – 8th. Each charity shop will play host on one of the days and Clare Volunteer Centre will be launching their knitted poem in Glor on the Wednesday. Participants can pick up registration books in advance and must go to the relevant shop each day to get the answer to the clue and a stamp or sticker to show they have been there. The charity shops involved are; Clarecare, Enable Ireland, Mid West Simon Community, Oxfam and the Somalia Shop.
