The Afternoon Show – Friday October 4th 2013

Joining Máire on today’s Afternoon Show was Mark Dunphy of Dunphy PR, Martin McMahon from the ICMSA and Verena Tarpey of Rape Crisis MidWest for the Friday Panel.  They discussed the excitement when All-Ireland winning Clare Senior and Under 21 Hurlers arrived home to a hero’s welcome in Ennis on Sunday night, cheered on by crowds of 30,000 people. Thousands more turned out to greet the victorious teams and the Liam McCarthy Cup along the way with huge celebrations in Cratloe, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket-on-Fergus and Clarecastle.  The panel also talked about how Clare has recorded its lowest level of people signing on the live register since March 2009. Figures released by the CSO show that the number has fallen by 630 in the last month meaning just under 9,000 people here are now claiming some form of unemployment benefit. They also tackled the issue of smoking and talked about Government plans to make Ireland tobacco free by 2025. In the plans smoking won’t be illegal – but it’s hoped smoking rates will be reduced from 22% to just five per cent. Under the plan, smoking will be banned in cars and in many public areas like playgrounds, creche’s and college campuses, plain packaging will be introduced and there will be further price increases on the price of cigarettes and tobacco.
