On The Afternoon Show today Elaine Geraghty, CEO of Inspire Ireland spoke to Gavin Grace about the Reach Out website which, has reported a ten per cent increase in the number of young people contacting the mental health service for help. Three quarters of those who contacted the service in the year to June 2012 reported psychological distress. The most common issues were depression and anxiety, followed by bullying and abuse, suicide and self-harm, relationships and eating disorders. Three quarters of young people who contacted the Reach Out site in the year to June 2012 reported psychological distress. There was a ten per cent increase in the number of people contacting the service – which helps young people with mental health issues. Lar Joye of the National Museum let our listeners know about how members of the public are being asked to choose an object which best represents modern Ireland for a new book. The objects represent various facets of modern day Ireland and include the original Anglo-Irish Bank sign from St Stephen’s Green, the outfits worn by Jean Butler and Michael Flatley in the original production of Riverdance, a pair of gloves worn by Ireland’s gold medal-winning Olympic boxer Katie Taylor as well as other objects including a decommissioned IRA weapon, a hospital trolley, a Holy Communion dress, a Certificate of Citizenship, the Euro and a smart phone. Visitors can vote in person at the museum or online at 100objects.ie

Siobhan O’Reilly and Ronan McMahon joined Gavin in studio to discuss their fundraising efforts for one of Clare’s best loved charity groups. Siobhan and Ronan are among the many runners taking part in the Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday to raise funds for Clare Crusaders. The Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic, located in Barefield is run on a voluntary basis and provides a variety of therapies to 190+ children in the Clare region. The services are free of charge and include speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education, physiotherapy and reflexology. The Clare Crusaders does not receive any government funding and relies on the fundraising and donations to generate the €250,000 required each year to maintain their existing services.

Also on today’s programme Steve Wall of The Stunning and The Walls spoke to Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan about the band’s plans to celebrate their 25th anniversary.  Steve and Joe Wall and the original line up of The Stunning will be in The Falls, Ennistymon on Sunday next. Steve discussed his acting roles in Moone Boy and about filming a new horror movie due out next year.  Natives of Ennistymon, Steve and Joe found inspiration from the town for songs such as ‘Frank the Tramp’ and ‘Town for Sale’ amongst others. The band hasn’t played Ennistymon since the early nineties, so this is a rare opportunity to see them in Joe and Steve’s hometown with the full, original line-up. Special guests: David Hope and Band.

Tadhg O’Brien of the Burren Sub Aqua Club also joined Gavin in studio to let us know about a special concert this weekend. On October 28th, to celebrate the BSAC 20th birthday, the RNLI and BSAC are jointly holding the last ever Divers’ Night at the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point.  It will star the Ceili Bandits, Tim Dennehy,  Edel Fox and Neill Byrne, and special guest and former member, Matt Molloy.   It will also be the 20th anniversary of the first Divers’ Night, which also starred Matt Molloy and produced a well known CD, Doolin Point: Best of Divers’ Nights 1992 – 1999.

Rebekha Doyle is from Scariff Foroige and has helped organise this weekend’s ScareFest Community Halloween Festival in Scariff. Scarefest is a 5 day community based Halloween Festival with something for all ages. The project is being run as a youth initiative, and is funded by the Youth In Action Programme. Events will be based on the themes of Art, Culture & Heritage and Environmental Sustainability. There is a Monster Ball for adults featuring Deflect Attention and Mustang Hobo followed by Transformer Sound and DJ No Comment at Ryan’s Bar on Friday Oct 26th, and a kids Halloween disco, several art workshops and a kids Halloween movie.
