The Afternoon Show – Friday November 16th 2012

On The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace spoke with Cyberpsychologist Mary Aiken. Mary is also a Research Fellow at the Institute of Leadership, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  She discussed the emerging phenomenon of ‘Cyberchondria’. When it comes to our health, we’ve never had more resources at our fingertips. We can now access immediate information online about every symptom, sign or itch we experience. But when does having a little bit of knowledge turn into an obsession? Cyberchondria is that moment when a person starts to spend countless hours on the internet trying to self-diagnose symptoms and then becomes anxious they may have the worst-case scenario. Also joining the discussion was Lisa Jewell, a journalist with The Irish Independent who has been researching and writing about the phenomenon. For more details on this you can check out the RCSI Mini Med series which is open to the public see http://www.rcsi.ie/index.jsp?p=162&n=633

Alan Nolan from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry – SIMI also joined the show to discuss how drivers are facing more changes to motor tax in next months’ budget. The system was overhauled in 2008 – to encourage motorists here to choose more fuel-efficient vehicles. But SIMI says we’re facing more changes to the system – this time to generate cash for the Government
