In studio with Máire was Ennis Theatre Director Laura Mulcahy, Caroline Browne from the Clare branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association and Clare FM Presenter Brian Flynn. They talked about comments made by Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald, who this week spoke candidly about mental health and bullying in a speech to students at Limerick Institute of Technology. Fitzgerald emphasised the vital role sport plays in people’s lives. “Sport has an important part to play in your mental well-being and your physical well-being. Sport has dictated my life,” he says. He spoke of being regularly tormented by bullies during his childhood. While also this week the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) has launched its annual Anti-Bullying Shield Campaign to continue to raise awareness of the issue of bullying and to highlight the positive work that has been undertaken with schools around the country. Today is their National Day of Action is Friday March 7th when volunteers across the country will take to the streets to sell the ISPCC Shield pins. They also discussed International Women’s Day, which takes place tomorrow. It is now an official holiday in many countries all over the world. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements.
They also talked about the lotto and how there's great excitement in Kilrush, the home of Ireland's newest lotto millionaire. The winning ticket, worth 8.3 million euro, was sold in Miniter's on Henry Street and is the biggest ever lotto win in the county. The news continues a remarkable lucky streak for Clare, which has now produced three lotto winners in the space of seven months. In August, a jackpot worth 6.1 million euro was won by a Limerick woman who bought her ticket in Lahinch, while a Clare couple bought a ticket in Quin in November, which scooped them the top prize of 5.5 million euro.
