The Afternoon Show – Friday March 21st 2014

The Afternoon Show today featured the Friday Panel, which consisted of Verena Tarpey from Rape Crisis MidWest, John Quinlivan formerly of Shannon Development and Rita McInerney from Ennis Chamber of Commerce. They talked about the main news headlines in Clare, Ireland and around the world this week including the ongoing tension in Crimea.  Russia has banned nine American politicians from entering the country – including Senator John McCain after the US President announced tougher sanctions against Russia. Today, a new agreement's been signed between Ukraine and the EU – in the wake of the Crimean crisis. It will offer Kiev economic and other support. Meanwhile the upper house of the Russian parliament's voted unanimously to approve Crimea becoming a part of its Federation. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk says it's not a decision he recognises.

Also up for discussion was how the Education Minister says the Government is looking at the possibility of fast-food exclusion zones around schools. Reports this morning said the coalition was considering a 1.5 kilometre no-fry zone around schools in a bid to tackle growing obesity in pupils. A quarter of 11-year-olds are now clinically obese.

And the panel also discussed how a Clare businessman has announced plans to create 10 new jobs by providing online broadcasts of Irish funeral services for expats. Alan Foudy says it's the only service of its kind in the British Isles, and that the positions will come on stream over the next 18 months. Funerals Live is targeted at emigrants who can't travel to attend family funerals. Those hoping to watch the service will be given a password in order to watch the live stream.
