The Afternoon Show – Friday June 14th 2013

Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on The Friday Panel on today’s Afternoon Show was Joe Queally, Ann Cronin
and Caroline Brown. All three joined him in studio to discuss the week’s news and major events. Among the issues they discussed was how the Cabinet this week agreed the new abortion legislation. The government says the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013 merely brings legal clarity to the issue, and does not extend the circumstances in which a termination will be made available.  We ask, with such strong views on both sides, is this a fair compromise? Also for discussion – In 1982, 46 priests of Killala diocese gathered for their annual retreat.  In 2032, it’s predicted, the number of priests in Killala will be six.  The figures are contained in ‘Who Will Break the bread for us?’ a new book by Fr. Brendan Hoban who says our priests are disappearing and we need to do something about it – now.  But how concerned are you about a reduction in priests? The panel also discussed the calls for urgent action to address youth unemployment.  Of the 61,767 young people on the live register at the end of April, 45% were signing on for one year or more. Over 9,000 were signing on for at least 3 years.   The Small Firms Association and National Youth Council of Ireland say young people need to be supported in efforts to get back to work, but should they be prioritised over people of other ages?

Also on the Friday Feature, Brian McManus from Clare Youth Service  gave us details of what services are on offer for those doing exams at the moment and up and coming summer events for teens.
