The Afternoon Show – Friday December 21st

On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace was in festive form for the last show of 2012.  He spoke to Ronan Byrne, a poultry farmer based in Athenry. Ronan uses traditional farming methods to produce chickens, ducks, bronze turkeys and geese on his farm in Athenry. He will discuss the life of a turkey and the work involved in rearing them and also how they are quite an intelligent bird. He also gave us tips on cooking the perfect Christmas bird – turkey or goose.

Also on today’s show, Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan paid a visit to the district day care centre in Clarecastle as they celebrated the festive season in style.  She spoke to the manger of the centre, Mary Morrissey and to some of the senior citizens who spend time there including Mary Whelan from Ennis, James O’Sullivan  from Ballynacally and Chris O’Halloran from Tubber. They spoke about the facilities they enjoy at the centre, their love of meeting their friends at the centre and praised the hard work undertaken by the staff and volunteers.  They also discussed their plans for Christmas!
 

As you heard on the Breakfast Show with Ross O’Donoghue this morning, Clare FM have been at Shannon Airport this week as families in Clare and across the Mid West welcome home their loved ones home for Christmas. Ross met with the Small family from Galway and asked them what they were feeling before one of their own walked into the arrivals hall.

We also heard from The Lissycasey Simpletons, who are Eva O’Malley, Kieran Moroney and Brian McSweeney. These three up and coming comedians and All Ireland Scor winners made it through to the final of Clare’s Got Talent 2012, the live stage show at Glor that saw hundreds audition and compete for the title and the €5,000 prize money.  It was stiff competition and really highlighted just how much raw talent exists in the Banner County.  On Clare FM this St. Stephen’s Day – Wednesday 26th December at 5pm. Gavin will be re-introducing you to some of the memorable acts that graced the stage for Clare’s Got Talent 2012 – including the Lissycasey Simpletons.

Also featured on the show today was Kitty Cassidy, a Singer and Traveller from Waterford. On St. Stephen’s Day, Clare FM’s Paula Carroll will present a West Wind Special featuring people from across the county and their memories of Christmas. Kitty Cassidy is a well-known singer who Paula met at last years Singers Festival in Spanish Point – she spoke to the audience there about hunting the wren and her memories of St. Stephen’s Day. You can hear more from Kitty and others with Paula Carroll on the West Wind Special on Wednesday December 26th –St. Stephen’s Day from 7pm.

Gavin was also joined by a special guest – Feakle singer Kate Purcell and her sister Tess were in studio to help us celebrate Christmas. Kate’s new album is entitled “Have You Ever Heard Christmas?” and features beautifully arranged festive songs from Kate, who’s accompanied by Denise Glass and Yuki Nishioka (the trio also form the group Thrillogy) and poetry read by family members and friends.  Kate’s own fond memories of Christmas inspired the album.
