Morning Focus Wednesday July 24

Bord na Mona says it’s ready to lodge planning permission for the reservoir, which would store water in County Laois for the Eastern region and extract water from Lough Derg, and that the project is being discussed at Cabinet level
However, the development has been met with stiff opposition from local representatives here in Clare, who want it not to be given the green light

On Wedensday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Colm O’Gogain of the Water Project at Bord na Mona to get the details of what they are proposing.

Gerry Siney of the River Shannon Protection Alliance says they have serious concerns about such a project as they fear it could interfere with water levels on the Shannon and ecosystems
Whitegate Councillor Pat Burke said he fears this project would be bad for the local environment and the local economy, if it gets the go-ahead.

A native of Kilmaley, Eamon has been appointed as Executive Director of the overseas Catholic development agency,
He’s has worked with Trocaire since 1991 and served as deputy Director since 2002 as he explained when he spoke with John.

Clare FM’s Maire Moynahan spent a morning in Lahinch this week as Clare County Council start their daily clean up – she met with Mary Skehan from the Council’s Environment Section, Stephen Lahiffe, the North Clare Area Engineer, local business interests such as Lou McCormack from Joe’s Cafe and Joe Garrihy from Seaworld to get their views on the issue of litter on the beach, the prom and the impression it can have on visitors to Clare’s coastal attractions – she also met with some beachgoers to see if they’ve been affected by trash as they enjoy their day at the seaside…

The Doonbeg Seafood Festival will take place from this Friday 26th to 28th
The festival, which is organized by the residents of Doonbeg, reflects the great local fishing tradition with the emphasis on seafood in the local restaurants in the area
The village of Doonbeg has a history of promoting successful festivals with the Doonbeg Jazz Festival and The Willie Keane Memorial  major highlights in West Clare
John spoke with Doonbeg Seafood Festival Committee member Tommy Commerford (PRO Doonbeg Fisherman’s Association) and Joe Russell, General Manager of Doonbeg Golf Club about the different events this weekend.
