A new series of draft burial ground bye-laws has seen a controversial rule regarding the depth of graves relaxed. It was initially proposed that the bye-laws would seek to enforce a minimum eight-foot depth for graves, but this was described as unworkable by critics. The Council, however, says it was merely re-inforcing a law that was over 120 years old, and now a Council Committee have come to an arrangement which will be put to all local represntatives in the near future. East Clare Councillor Pat Hayes says the controversial eight foot rule will continue to be enforced but only where possible – he spoke to John Cooke. Lahinch FG Cllr Bill Slattery also joined the conversation along with Doolin gravedigger John Flaherty who both welcomed the news that 8 ft would no longer be neccessary for areas where deemed unsuitable.
