Morning Focus – Wednesday 21/02/18

The midweek edition of Morning Focus heard the inspiring story of a pensioner doing a ‘Lap of the Map’ to raise funds for the RNLI.

Mary Hickey joined Gavin on her trip through County Clare.

The show opened with a discussion of moves to ban smoking at all public facilities run by Clare County Council. Gavin was joined by Cllr Ann Norton (Ind) one of the HSE West Regional Forum members proposing the measure.

Gavin then spoke to Pat Gavin of Carrigaholt who is campaigning passionately for the rights of his severely disabled daughter. Isabel was refused a Primary Medical Certificate and Pat is now calling on parents and others who’ve been denied this support to come together to campaign.

Lahinch has been tipped to host the Irish Open next year and with this in mind, Gavin spoke to Michael Vaughan a local hotelier and former head of the Irish Hotels Federation.

The talk then turned to the supports retails need from government to compete with online shopping. Gavin spoke to Lorraine Higgins of the Ennis-based group, Retail Excellence Ireland.

Afterwards, John O’Brien joined Gavin in studio ahead of a lecture he’s giving tonight (Feb 21) at the Oakwood Hotel, Shannon, on the Ralahine Commune founded in the 1800s.

Then, Clare FM’s James Mulhall reported from a networking event ahead of the launch next month of the Lough Derg Blueway.

After that, East Clare-based poet, Nicki Griffin joined Gavin in studio.

Then, it was time for some drama, with the Ennis players coming to studio ahead of their production of ‘The Stolen Child’ at glór next Monday (Feb 27).

The show rounded off with a visit from vet John Underhill from Burren Vets, Ennistymon.
