Morning Focus – Wednesday 18/07/18

Wednesday’s Morning Focus started off on a pessimistic note I’m afraid. We heard from Lisa Marmion, Services Development Manager for SAFE Ireland, who told us about the latest delay in the construction of emergency shelter for victims of domestic abuse.

Five units were meant to be built in Ennis by the end of the year but have now been delayed a further 18 months.

Then the Presidential election is once again causing a stir. MEP for Fine Gael Seán Kelly was on the show calling for Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fine Gael to rescind support for President Higgins. He argues that Fine Gael supporters feel ‘sidelined’ as Sinn Féin fields a candidate, Fianna Fáil allows their councillors to nominate candidates and Independent candidates grow in number. Kelly is also eager to run himself.

Morning Focus’ first hour ended with an overview of Fleadh na Mumhan with Michaeál Ó Riabhaigh, secretary for the Fleadh. It maybe Wednesday but there is still a host of workshops, performances and sessions to enjoy as well as Gig Rig and street entertainment. Josephine Marsh and Kieran Moroney also joined Gavin in studio.

Opening the show’s second hour was Dr. Máire Finn for our Ask the GP segment. This week dealt with thyroid issues among other things.

Then it was time for another regular segment, The Greatest Song You’ve Probably Never Heard with Clare FM’s Brian Flynn. This week’s song was ‘Eve of Destruction’ by Barry Maguire.

Finally, the show rounded out with our Ask the Vet segment and John Underhill of Burren Vets, Ennistymon.
