A packed Morning Focus took a look from a Clare perspective on another historic day in Irish politics as Leo Varadkar became Ireland’s youngest ever Taoiseach.

News that Bank of Ireland is to make all cash transactions self-service before the end of the year has been greeted with dismay by some campaign groups. Gavin was joined by Justin Moran of Age Action Ireland who said the fast pace of change means older people could be left behind.

In a court case heard in Ennis this week, the HSE attempted to block an order by health watchdog HIQA to close St Joseph’s Hospital to new admissions. The case has been adjourned and in the meantime, the hospital can continue to take new patients. Gavin was joined on the line by Bernard Glouster, Chief Officer, HSE Mid West Community Healthcare.

The topic of drink driving the high level of enforcement of the laws in Clare was the next topic for discussion. Gavin was joined on the line by councillors Michael Hillery (FF, West Clare MD) and Pat Burke (FG, Killaloe MD) and we also heard audio from Clare’s Chief Superintendent John Kerin. A West Clare businesswoman has been expressing her anger at the fact that the Rural Regeneration Scheme doesn’t accept applications from companies. Louise McGuane of Chapel Gate Whiskey submitted a plan for a whiskey tasting room, which she believes could create jobs and drive tourism. However, she’s since been told her application is void. She told Gavin of her shock and annoyance at the decision.

Clare Dyslexia Association will hold a free awareness event at Ennis National School tonight (Weds. June 14). Fidelma Mooney, Chairperson of the clare Dyslexia Association joined Gavin to outline supports for those with dyslexia.

Marty Holland has just returned to his home in Cratloe after walking 4,000 km along the coast of Ireland. Marty undertook his ‘Coast for Cancer’ challenge to raise funds, following the death of two close friends. He told Gavin about his adventure. Listen back below:

Karen Foley, Environmental Awareness Officer with Clare County Council was Gavin’s next guest and updated him on the Green Dog Walkers initiative, which encourages pet owners to leave only paw prints after their walk.

Paddy Waldron from Kilrush and District Historical Society invited listeners to get involved in a major historical survey of a local graveyard.
