Morning Focus Wednesday 13th August

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus John began by talking about all things leaving cert results.  Jan O'Sullivan is the new Minister for Education and today she's congratulating students across the country on their Leaving Cert results.  John spoke to her about the point’s race and guidance needed to go to college or into the workplace.  We then went live to St Patrick's Comprehensive in Shannon where Amy Ryan, Morning Focus Producer was with students were nervously awaiting their results.

On Thursday, July 24th, Offaly Under 21 Hurling Manager and Farmer Dermot Hogan was painting the roof of a shed on his farm in Coolderry, near Roscrea when he stepped on a perspex skylight, falling through it to the ground and his tragic, untimely death. At just 45 years of age, Dermot left a grieving wife and three daughters behind, as well as his parents and brothers.  While still coming to terms with the loss of his brother, Eugene Hogan spoke to John about the pain of losing someone in such freak circumstances, and he highlighted the importance of farm safety. He also explained the stages of grief his family are going through and the huge support they've received from others.

In our Morning Focus Health Matters slot we spoke with Dr Finn from the Ennis Family Medical Centre

Today’s topic:

Strokes

Doctor Maire Finn is from the Ennis Family Medical Centre, and will be joining us again next week for more medical advice.

We then heard more from the students in Shannon as they opened their long awaited results to see if all that study had paid off.  Lynda O'Shea – PRO National Parents Council was up next speaking to John in relation to a help line they run for students and parents following the results.   The Helpline is provided courtesy of the National Parents' Council in association with the Irish Independent, Eircom and supported by the Dept. of Education & Skills. The Institute of Guidance Counsellors are employed to provide qualified guidance counsellors to give advice and support to both students and their parents.
