Wednesday’s morning Focus opened with a reoccurring issue for both the show and for Ennis, begging.
Gavin was joined by Councillors Alan O’Callaghan and Mary Howard, two of three councillors calling for by-laws to deal with so called ‘professional beggars’.
Then, as the sun appears to be a permanent fixture in Ireland’s sky at the moment people continue to flock to the beach. However, those planning on going into the water should be careful as Lion’s Mane jellyfish numbers continue to rise. Their sting, while not fatal, has already hospitalized five people. Jasmine Headlam, leading researcher at the Martin Ryan Marine Institute at NUI Galway told us everything we need to know.
Finishing out the show’s first hour was disappointing news as the Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme hit a delay. The scheme which would have protected 120 homes and businesses and St.Flannan’s College now won’t begin construction until next year as a contractual issue means the works are to be re-tendered. Minister Pat Breen discussed the situation further.
Opening the show’s second hour, Garda Sargent John Maloney detailed the Junior Cycle Tour of Ireland. Today (Wednesday, July 11th) sees the second stage taking riders along the Shannon Estuary and around the Loop Head Peninsula before finishing on the seafront in Kilkee. Tomorrow (Thursday, July 12th) sees riders starting in Ennis at 11am and passing through Inagh, Quilty, Spanish Point, Lahinch, Ennistymon and Liscannor, heading toward the Cliffs of Moher.
The show’s next guest was Irish yachtswoman, Joan Mulloy. Mulloy is planning to be the first woman to complete the Solitaire du Figaro, a solo, multi-stage race spanning the length of the French coast from the Mediterranean to the North Atlantic Ocean. She does this to promote the ‘Taste the Atlantic – A Seafood Journey’ project with Bord Iascaigh Mhara. Taste the Atlantic is a seafood trail developed with Fáilte Ireland designed to bring awareness to how Irish seafood is sustainably caught and farmed along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Then it was time for this week’s segment of ‘The Greatest Song You’ve Probably Never Heard’ with Clare FM’s Brian Flynn. This week’s song was Jimmy Nail’s ‘Big River’.
The show ended with another regular segment, Ask the Vet with John Underhill from Burren Vets in Ennistymon. As always John answered a variety of pet related questions and queries.
