Morning Focus – Wednesday 01/08/18

The show began this Wednesday with a look at tourism.

In 2011 the VAT rate was cut from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent to enable growth in the industry. A Department of Finance report has claimed that this reduction has done its job and it’s time to increase the rate again. Michael Vaughan owner of the Vaughan Lodge, Lahinch and past President of the Irish Hotels Federation was on the show to give his point of view.

Then we had an update on the upcoming Presidential Election. Yesterday (July 31st) Waterford Council heard from candidates seeking a nomination. Those included Senator Joan Freeman, businessman Gavin Duffy and former Aer Lingus worker Patrick Feeney. Two candidates, artist Kevin Sharkey and Athlone woman Marie Goretti Moylan, have written to the Clare Council to seek a nomination. A candidate must get four councils to nominate them to be in the running. Our political correspondent, Sean Defoe, had more details.

Finishing out the show’s first hour was Rev. Dr. Éamonn Fitzgibbon, Director of the Irish Institute for Pastoral Studies. He talked about the future of Irish Parishes and Churches, especially in light of the recent priest shortages. What does a modern Church look like? Éamonn will be speaking with a multitude of other speakers including Cardinal John Dew, Archbishop of Welington and South African Bishop Michael Wustenberg at a event at the end of the month August 28th and 29th. More information will be released nearer the time.
