On Tuesday's edition of Morning Focus with John Cooke
There's been widespread anger and some genuine concern in parts of Clare since Eircodes became available early this week. The system uses addresses which link an area to their main postal sorting office, and in 5% of cases this means a property reads as being in another county. The rate in Clare though is much higher, as in Shannon and large parts of East Clare, a Limerick address is recorded, while it's Galway for some in Tubber and Ballyvaughan. Frances Cinnane of Shannon's Oakwood Arms Hotel and David Quinn of Hylands Burren Hotel Ballyvaughan both expressed their concern with Eircode spokesman Liam Duggen on the show.
A decision on whether a controversial road in South-East Clare will go ahead has been put off. Thirteen Councillors outlined their concerns about the Limerick Northern Distributor Road last night, ahead of what was described as "the most important decision" facing Clare's local representatives in recent history. A vote will now be held at a re-convened meeting in ten days time, and there have been suggestions that a working group be set up to find an balance between the division of a community and a necessary development. A number of local residents expressed their disappointment of the deferal to Clare FMs Fiona Cahill, while on the show John spoke with Edward English Resident of Parteen and Chairman of the Northern Distributor Concerned Residents group.
Returning to the issues around the new postcodes, Eoin Gavin, of Eoin Gavin Transport Based in Bunratty called the show to air the issues this new system will bring to his business that operated from Bunratty in Co. Clare with an Eircode address of Co. Limerick.
Dr Conor Murphy, researcher at Icarus, the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Units, based at NUI Maynooth spoke to John about Irish Summer Storms and whether or not they are the norm? Summers in Ireland used to be better, with all-day sunshine and never a drop of rain, right? Wrong. A major international weather study going back 142-years shows that summers here typically have plenty of storms and rain. Dr. Murphy explains why to John.
