Morning Focus – Tuesday 9th July.

On Tuesdays Morning Focus its finally been announced, after months of speculation, that the ESB has confirmed that over 100 jobs are to go at Moneypoint Power Station in West Clare.

The company met with staff at the coal-burning plant yesterday, when it’s understood they were told that the workforce will be reduced to 86 by October, with 106 workers being let go. Staff were told that voluntary severance packages and offers of redeployment would be available. It’s been well flagged that the power station is to cease its current coal burning operations by 2025, and the ESB says it needs to realign its operations at Moneypoint. Cllr Ian Lynch from Clare County Council joined Gavin to discuss what this could mean for West Clare.

The head of the Catholic Church in Ireland believes it’s time for Irish society to “reignite a temperance movement” to address issues with alcohol. Archbishop Eamon Martin told the Irish Independent that he’s concerned about the “terrible impact” it’s having on families. He added that addictions can “devastate” family and social lives.
Fr Brendan Quinlivan Parish Priset for Tulla & Communications Officer for Diocese of Killaloe Joined Gavin live in the studio an how we can address alcohol.

Gavin’s next’s guest had a very distressing experience after discovering that the grave of a relative has been desecrated. Michael Slattery from Clarecastle discovered last month that the grave of his mother and grandfather was virtually split in two by vandals. It’s the second time that a family grave has been targeted and Michael had to erect a new headstone 10 years ago. He believes the incident is part of a wider societal issue of vandalism which is also affecting the good work of organisations like that of the Tidy Towns groups.

Her second poetry collection, ‘out of emptied cups’, is published by Salmon Poetry this month and has been earning rave reviews for the Sydney resident.

If you walk into either of the Fitzpatrick’s Hotels in Manhattan, then immediately you feel like you’re in a piece of Ireland. Photos of prominent Irish figures adorn the walls, you’ll likely hear Irish accents among the staff, and you’ll be in an establishment that prides itself on offering the Irish welcome in the Big Apple.

It is at the heart of the Irish community there, and at the heart of the Fitzpatrick’s Hotel near Grand Central Station is Patrick Leydon from Tulla. Gavin met him while at the hotel in New York and asked him first how he ended up in New York in the first place. He told me that he first moved there in 1990.
