Today (May 8) is World Ovarian Cancer Day and to mark the fact, Sláinte an Chláir is reaching out to those affected, through the publication of a new advice leaflet.

Oncology nurse and ovarian cancer survivor Anne Murphy, from Tulla, joined Gavin in studio to discuss the warning signs. She also shared her views on the ongoing controversy over CervicalCheck, the national cervical screening programme.

Tuesday’s show opened with a discussion of the same issue, with Cllr James Breen (Ind.) saying that strong action was required to avoid a complete lack of confidence for the public in the health service.

Then, Shaneda Daly, survivor of a decade of abuse at her County Clare home, spoke to Morning Focus producer Fiona McGarry ahead of a meeting tomorrow (May 9) with Minister Charlie Flanagan. Shaneda wants to convince the justice minister to introduce structured sentencing for sex offenders and to make the experience a slightly easier one for victims.

After that, the discussion turned to the issue of a proposed five percent cut to the Common Agricultural Policy Budget (CAP). The Clare Chair of the IFA, Willie Hanrahan, shared his concerns with Gavin.

The fascinating story of the pirates who roamed the west coast of Ireland was then discussed with author and journalist, Des Eskin. Des is the author of a new book, ‘Ireland’s Pirate Trail’.

Then, Gavin was joined by Dick Cronin who was instrumental in restoring Dysert O’Dea Castle in Corofin. He spoke to Morning Focus ahead of celebrations to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Dysert O’Dea.
