Catherine Shanahan, Irish Examiner Health Specialist spoke to Morning Focus following a special report titled "Pill Pop Nation" in today's Irish Examiner. This is a study into the use of anti-depressants, which found that 2.3 million prescriptions were written for these drugs in 2012. The research finds 7.5 per cent of people in Clare were taking these drugs – a figure broadly in line with the national average – while the total cost for patients here on the top five most frequently prescribed anti anxiety drugs is over 820 thousand euro.

On the topic of Gaming Addiction among young people, Dr Mosaje Bhamjee is a Psychiatrist and Former Clare Labour TD based in Bushy Park Addition Treatment Centre, Ennis and John Kennedy Editor of Ireland's leading technology news service, Silicon Republic both spoke to Marian. John outlined the nature of popular video and online games among young people and the addictive features they possess. While,  Dr. Bhamjee outlined how becoming addicted to video games at a young age can lead to much more damaging addictions later in life, especially gambling. 

 

Partial Solar Eclipse (visible from Ireland) occurred today, (Friday) from 8.20 am onward with the maximum point at 9:45am. Gordon Lolar, Chairman Shannon Astronomy Club spoke to us about the Eclipse and where best to view it. Club members were planning to travel to the Stone Circle in Grange to view the Eclipse. Linda Brannigan Optometritist with Eye Candy Optionists, Ennis joined Marian in studio to talk about the necessary protective eye wear when looking at the solar eclipse and in general how the right UV protection is very important. 

    

Morning Focus Health Matters with Dr Máire Finn from the Ennis Family Medical Centre. 
For today's topic Dr. Maire outlined what necessary information we all should know ahead of a Doctor’s appointment as well as the important elements to get checked out depending on our gender, age and family health history.

The 6th annual Pakie Ryan Memorial 5k walk 10 k run 10 mile run 30 and 50 K Cycle takes place  in Newmarket on Fergus Saturday March 21st from 10:30 AM with egistration 20€ at www.pakieryanrun.com. Paul Tuoey the run organiser and Anthony O Looney Chairman of the run committee joined Marian in studio to raise awareness of the event. All proceeds to Clare Crusaders, Laura Lynn, RNLI , O'Regan Park, Bunratty Search and Rescue and TLC for CF. Event special guest is Irish Boxing champion, Bernard Dunne. 

 

“Scenes of West Clare” is a joint painting exhibition by mother and daughter Geraldine and Elaine Cowley currently on show in Culturlann Sweeney Gallery, Kilkee. Elaine spoke to Marian a little about the exhibit and the inspiration behind the pieces, recalling on memories of visiting West Clare as child to see her Grandparents and extended family. The Exhibit will be in Kilkee until April 4th.
