Morning Focus Thursday August 8

Irish Cycling Legend Sean Kelly will be on the roads of Clare tomorrow as part of the 2013 Tour de Munster 2013 – a four-day 600Km charity cycle in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland
This morning he’s leading a 120 strong team of ‘leisure’ cyclists as they start out on their route throughout all the counties of Munster – from Cork – ending up in Killaloe tonight

On Thursday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Sean as he headed for the starting line and he spoke about the significance of the Tour De Munster.

Clare FM’s Deputy News Editor Trudy Waters joined John in studio to discuss the inquests into the deaths of two Quilty fishermen that took place yesterday
They returned verdicts of accidental drowning
64 year old Michael Galvin and his 35 year old neighbour Noel Dickinson died after their boat – The Lady Eileen sank off the West Clare Coast last August
County Coroner Isabel O’Dea extended her sympathies to the families of both fishermen who were present for today’s inquest and also acknowledged efforts made by the rescue services in recovering their bodies.

Investigations are continuing into a hoax bomb threat which forced a flight from Shannon Airport to make an emergency landing in the US
The US Airways flight 777 landed at its intended destination in Philadelphia without incident – but was taxied to a remote location where it was met by law enforcement and emergency personnel
However they were later given the all clear- Trudy gave a run down of what happened.

The 2013 Merriman Summer School takes place in Lisdoonvarna next Wednesday until Sunday 18th 
The theme is ‘Ireland, North and South -two societies growing apart’
The school will take a close look at politics, society and culture in the two Irelands over the past 15 years since the Good Friday Agreement

Long Range Weather Forecaster Ken Ring from Auckland, NZ spoke with John on the programme last January about his Weather Almanac for Ireland
He predicted then that temperatures will stay above 20 degrees for most of the summer – with some days as hot as 30 degrees – he also said that July 9th would be the hottest day of the year
Ken joined John again to reflect on getting it right – and tell us what’s in store for the next few months
He said we can expect the hot weather will return in the middle of August
