Morning Focus heard tributes to Clare native Brian O’Callaghan Westropp who lost his life in devastating wildfires while on honeymoon in Greece.

Fr Shay Casey, Chaplain of Athlone IT and Cllr Pat McMahon from Newmarket On Fergus both knew the family and joined Gavin to pay tribute.

Then the focus shifted to the family of Edel Kelly from Kilrush. Edel died aged 26 due to breast cancer. There was a 13 month delay in diagnosing Edel’s breast cancer and subsequent delay in treating her. Edel’s family took the HSE to court over this fact. The HSE admitted to breach of duty in the case but did not admit to causing Edel’s death. This week the family settled their High Court action against the HSE. Patrick Moylan, solicitor for the Kelly family joined Gavin to discuss the case more in depth.

Finishing the first hour we had a visit from a second solicitor, Melanie Power of Mesh Survivors Ireland. Melanie was previously on the show representing the group and described the common post-natal procedure involving transvaginal mesh devices and problems that can follow. Recently, the Health Minister announced the suspension of the product and an inquiry into its effects.

The second hour opened with Andy Tierney MD and founder of Tierneys in Ennis. Tierney’s is regarded as a leading IT provider within the hospitality sector in Ireland and the UK. Andy founded the company when he was made redundant from a company in Shannon. He had enough to cover his mortgage, a desire to stay in Clare and a dream and now here we are celebrating 25 years of Tierney’s.
