Morning Focus – Thursday 19/12/19

Today on Morning Focus, we were joined in studio by Samaritans Volunteer, ‘Jessica’ as the Samaritans are preparing for Christmas.

The Ennis and Clare Samaritans are promising that ‘Yule’ not go lonely this Christmas. The charity, which operates a freephone and drop-in centre service, is preparing for the busy Christmas period. They’ll be holding a candlelight vigil in Ennis this Saturday, the longest night of the year, and will be on standby for anyone who needs them all Christmas, including Christmas Day itself.

This morning a number of homes and businesses were without power and trees down around the county after Storm Elsa made her presence known last night. Trea Heapes of Pure Camping Loop head joined us on the line to share her experience of the storm on the Loop Head Peninsula. The storm landed in Clare with a yellow-weather warning from Met Eireann last night, which – in their own words means ‘not unusual weather, localised danger’. Judging by the images and videos being shared online overnight showed a much stronger storm that many would have expected.

Next on Morning Focus, a lady got in touch with the show as she went through a terrifying ordeal when she was targetted by thieves while sitting outside a shopping centre. In a matter of moments, a man had leapt from a nearby car, grabbed some items from the car she was sitting in and fled. The incident left the woman very upset – particularly as a handbag that was stolen contained a very personal item. She was unwilling to speak directly to us this morning but instead asked her friend to make an appeal on her behalf – we heard from ‘Sharon’ as she spoke to Clare FM’s Ben Sweeney.

Next, Dr Toby Sachsenmaier joined us for some Parenting Advice as we discussed why Christmas Rituals are so important to Parents and Children.

Next on the show, we were joined by Kilrush RNLI Volunteers, James Harding and John Vaughan and Kilrush RNLI Press Officer and Volunteer Charlie Glynn as we regularly highlight the work being done by the Coast Guard and RNLI on the waters surrounding the county. This morning we found out a bit about why people get involved and put themselves in a situation where they could need to get involved in a life-saving exercise with just minutes notice.

To wrap up today’s Morning Focus we had an Arts Update with Clare County Arts Officer, Siobhán Mulcahy.
