Morning Focus – Thursday 12/07/18

Today, Thursday’s Morning Focus began with Cllr. James Breen calling for a cremation wall to be built for Drumcliffe Cemetery.

The suggestion comes after cemeteries across the country begin to run out of space. Morning Focus Producer, Fiona Mc Garry went out to Drumcliffe Cemetery to see the situation first hand and discuss the topic with Cllr. Breen.

Then is Kilkishen in Co.Limerick? According to Fáilte Ireland it might be, as a mistake was spotted in one of their brochures advertising the midwestern reason. The brochure put both Kilkishen and the 12 O’Clock Hills in Limerick. Mike McInerney the man who spotted the mistake discussed the situation with Gavin this morning.

The hour ended with discussion of the possible presidential election. Councillors Michael Begley and Pat Hayes joined Gavin to discuss the possible candidates and who the parties may put forward.

The second hour opened with Saoirse Brady, Legal and Policy officer for the Children’s Rights Alliance talking about a new Action Plan on Online Safety for Children. The Children’s Rights Alliance while glad to see proposals to introduce new online criminal offences for things like stalking or revenge porn the Alliance believe the plan is not concrete enough. The Alliance expressed fears that the code of practice was too voluntary and likely to be ignored by mega corporations as a result.

Then, we heard from Kier McNamara who told us about the new WWII memorial planned for the Clare Peace Park. The group have managed to secure funding from the Royal British Legion and are currently looking for names and information on Clare soldiers who served in WWII. Then we had our weekly arts round up with Clare County Arts Officer, Siobhán Mulcahy.

Finally, Tom Cussen of the trad band Shaskeen gave us all the details on the band’s latest Clare appearance. The band will be playing in the Abbey Hall, Clarecastle this Sunday, July 15th to kick off the Céilí at the Crossroads Festival. The following week will be filled with céilís and dance classes. Just keep an eye out in the Clarecastle area!
