Morning Focus – Thursday 12/03/20

To open the show, we were joined on the line by Dr Michael Harty, Kilmihil GP, as he responds to the latest government virus measures as the World Health Organisation last night declared a pandemic.

The US is suspending all travel from mainland Europe because of the coronavirus outbreak. Donald Trump announced restrictions will come in on Friday for the next 30 days – but it won’t apply to Ireland or the UK.

Following from that we were joined on the line by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to discuss Covid – 19 and to hear his reaction to comments made previously by Dr Harty. The government has called on employers to support their staff through virus-related leave. They’ve announced a number of supports, including a 3 billion euro fund.

Next on the show, we were joined on the line by Susan O’ Dwyer, CEO of Make A Wish as one of their major fundraisers has been affected by measures to protect against Covid – 19. They’ve cancelled tomorrow’s on-street collection but are now holding the Virtual Wish Day and are asking the public to continue to support them through their website, www.makeawish.ie or via text.

After the 10am News we were joined in studio by Parenting Expert, Dr Toby Sachsenmaier for some advice for parents in relation to the Coronavirus.

Next on the show, President of the Irish Pharmacists Union Darragh Connelly joined us on the line to discuss how Pharmacists are urging calm amid virus fear, some Irish pharmacies are limiting the number of hand sanitizers people can buy as the coronavirus spreads. Three new cases of Covid 19 were confirmed last night bringing the total number of those infected in the Republic to 24. The country’s Chief Medical Officer says Ireland remains in a containment phase but we will eventually move to delay phase and then on to mitigation phase.
