Morning Focus – Monday 30/04/18

Monday’s show included a special package on some wildlife who’ve been attracting attention in Ennis recently.

As the days are getting longer and warmer, the Kilrush road area has had some unexpected guests causing mischief on their public junction. A herd of up to 22 goats have been roaming the area and are causing a lot of concern around the Kilrush Road and Cahercalla. Morning Focus Producer Fiona McGarry spoke to some of those affected.

To kick off the show, Gavin was joined on the line by Independent TD Dr Michael Harty on the CervicalCheck scandal, following Vicky Phelan bravery in telling her story.

Gavin then spoke with Moira Garry a retired postmistress from West Clare who is urging people to keep the network of rural post offices viable.

Shannon Group has been highlighted as a key economic engine for development in this region in it’s economic impact report. Research carried out by W2 Consulting shows that the group supports 46,000 jobs, while its economic impact is 3.6 billion euro annually. Last week, Shannon Group announced that it has seen its pre-tax profits rise to 8.9 million euro in the space of a year. The group’s annual report has revealed a 22 percent rise in profits. Mary Considine who is the Shannon Group Deputy CEO, joined Gavin on air to talk about their success.

In this county, we all know about the wonderful work of the RNLI. The service at Lough Derg is an invaluable resource, particularly as the Summer approaches. Now, they’re looking for your help. Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 1st) Lough Derg RNLI Fundraising Branch will be outside Aldi in Nenagh for the local lifeboat based in Dromineer. Eleanor Hooker of Lough Derg RNLI, spoke with Gavin about the importance of raising funds.

Bairbre Higgins is a stockbroker turned novelist who pioneers self-publishing. Bairbre worked in the world of high finance, travelling extensively in her role as a stockbroker and hedge fund manager. She left that life behind to raise her family and to fulfill her long-held dream of becoming a writer. Bairbre has just published a thriller called The Torch Bearers. She hopes that her decision will encourage others to self-publish too.

As always on a Monday, Gavin hosted the Monday Sports Panel. This week he was joined by Peter O’Connell of the Clare Champion and, Clare FM Head of Sport, Derrick Lynch.

There has been a lot of concern in many parts of rural Clare, after claims by Clare Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley, that 14 existing post masters and postmistresses in the county have been offered voluntary redundancies by the company. An Post inists there will be no compulsory closure of offices, and their moves comes in the wake of talks with the Irish Postmasters Union. Moira Garry who served as a post mistress in Cooraclare before she retired in 2007 spoke with Gavin about the recent news.

After the Monday Sports Panel, Gavin rounded off the show by meeting with Nina Kate, Interior designer & Feng Shui specialist. As part of its celebrations of four decades in business, Maddens Furniture will host designer and Feng Shui expert on Thursday, May 3rd at 7 pm. Nina will educate those attending on the importance of good energy in your home and how to create this in your own space.
