Morning Focus – Monday 23/12/19

Today on Morning Focus, we heard from Musician Mundy ahead of his intimate gig in Doolin next week. 

Renowned Musician Mundy is coming to Clare for an intimate gig next week. The man behind ‘July’ and ‘Galway Girl’ will be in Hotel Doolin this Sunday thanks to Anam Music and our own Eoin O’Neill. Mundy spoke to our very own Ben Sweeney.

Before that though, first on the show, The Minister for Rural and Community Development was in Clare on Friday to turn the sod on the new County Library and to officially open a new state-of-the-art one million euro Multi-Service Innovation Centre in Ennistymon. Gavin spoke to him as he visited the new library spot on the glór campus on Friday morning.

Next on the show the Bishop of Killaloe Fintan Monahan joined us in studio as he encourages embracing strangers this Christmas. Bishop Monahan has said he hopes that asylum seekers and immigrants will find a warm welcome here and he expressed the wish in his Christmas Blessing as he said the issue of asylum seekers has polarised communities over the past year. He was speaking after an independent living centre with a capacity of 64 people opened in Ennis this month.

Then on Morning Focus, we were joined on air by some of the organisers involved in the Christmas swims which take place around the county on Christmas Day.

Colm Killeen an Organiser of the Doonbeg swim said the swim takes place at white strand beach, Doonbeg at 12:15 – its the 7th year of this swim and they are splitting the money made between Milford hospice and the Neo-Natal Unit in UHL.

John O’Connell an Organiser of the Kildysart Swim said it takes place at Gortglass Lake, Kildysart at 12:00 – this will be the swims 16th year and they are raising money for West Clare Cancer Centre.
Christy McGrath an Organiser of the Killaloe swim said it takes place at Two Mile Gate at 12:30 – and its been running since 1989 and they are raising funds for the local Athletic Club as they are hoping to raise money for a new running track facility.
Cliodhna Fawl an Organiser of the Lahinch swim said people are to meet by the slip rail near the surfer’s shop, the swim is 30 years old, and is raising funds for sláinte an chláir

After that, we were joined in studio by Clare FM’s Padraic Flaherty, Programme Controller, as we chatted all about what will be on the airwaves throughout the holiday season. the Clare FM Christmas schedule

There are so many Christmas swims taking place around the county we had more to mention so next we spoke to John O’Connell who is an organiser involved in the Kildysart Swim, he said it takes place at Gortglass Lake, Kildysart at 12:00 – this will be the swims 16th year and they are raising money for West Clare Cancer Centre.

Lastly, we spoke to Therese Young, who is an organiser of the Kilrush Swim which takes place in Aylevaroo at 11:15 in aid of Happy Feet, Happy Mind.
