Morning Focus Friday November 9

With just one day to go until the Children’s Referendum, campaigners for both the YES and NO sides will be out canvassing today in a last ditch attempt to sway voters.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that the information campaign run by the Government – in booklets and on its website – was one-sided, in favour of the YES campaign
But the Government’s insisting that the ruling will not affect the referendum and does not change the substance of putting children’s rights in the constitution

On Friday’s Morning Focus John Cooke discussed the ruling and its implications with Maura Adshead, Head of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Limerick.

Public campaigning in the Children’s Referendum will come to an end at 2 o’clock this afternoon as a broadcast moratorium takes effect
Here in Clare ballot boxes are being distributed to 173 polling stations in the Clare constituency – and a further seven in Parteen, Westbury and Corbally which are part of the Limerick City Constituency
79, 905 people are elgible to vote in the referendum in Clare tomorrow, while counting will take place at the Courthouse in Ennis on Sunday, in a move from the usual hotel venues in the town
Pat Wallace, Returning Officer in Clare, spoke with Clare FM’s Trudy Waters

The third open festival is taking place this Tuesday
The Killaloe Festival of Light occurs annually when the moon is absent (black/new moon) after the harvest full moon
It marks the end of Summer (light) and the arrival of Winter (darkness)
Traditionally this would signify the end of the year (now the end of our financial year)
It is said to be the day when the veil between the two worlds is thinnest and hence a day to remember the dead
This important festival has now been replaced by Halloween, all saints day and all souls day but traditionally it should tie in with the lunar calendar
Douggie Hyde is on the organising committee of the Killaloe Festival of Lights, he had a word with John.

The Ennis Trad Festival kicked off last night and runs until Monday
John was joined in studio by three Italiam musicians visiting Ennis this weekend
Tommaso Tornielli, who is a flute player and Artistic Director of the Eire Le Festa; Gregorio Bellodi, an uilleann pipe player and Daniele Bicego, also on the uilleann pipes

The Ennis Trad Festival is twinned with the ‘Eire La Festa’ an Irish music festival that takes pace in Bondeno, Ferrara in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy. In May an earthquake in this area killed at least seven people and caused serious damage to buildings in several towns
The magnitude-6.0 quake struck about 35km (22 miles) north of the city of Bologna.
