Two local Gardai are to be honoured for their outstanding acts of bravery at a ceremony in Dublin today

On Friday’s Morning Focus Marian Egan spoke with Garda James Hanley of Ennis Garda Station
On January 13th of this year, Garda Hanley and a colleague responded to a 999 call indicating that a woman had jumped into the River Fergus
When arriving at the scene, they found her to be unresponsive, so Garda Hanley waded out through the river’s strong current and was able to remove her with the assistance of others

In a seperate incident in June of last year, Lissycasey man and Clare Senior Football Goalkeeper Joe Hayes, a Garda based at Henry Street in Limerick, made a save of a different kind, as he pulled a 22-year-old woman from the River Shannon
Both will be among 21 people who are to be recognised at today’s National Bravery Awards.

Marian spoke to the man who was recently appointed to promote foreign direct investment into the Midwest
Conor Agnew is the IDA’s new Mid-West Regional Business & Relationship Development Manager

An estimated 60 thousand student grants will be awarded for this academic year
The student grants awarding body SUSI says 39 thousand grants have already been paid, from the 43 thousand awarded to date
Two thirds of the grants being awarded are to new applicants

Denis O’Connell- Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer with the Clare Fire Service – spoke with Marian about how Halloween night went for the service
Personnel with the Clare Fire Service came under fire while attending to a bonfire in the West of the county
Youths threw stones at fire personnel as they tended to a bonfire in Kilrush, one of just four Halloween-related incidents that local firefighters were called to last night.

The virtual world will be lit up tomorrow- All Souls Day- in memory of Clare’s deceased loved ones in a unique celebration organised by international aid agency Bóthar at St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick
