Morning Focus – Friday 29/06/18

There was lively discussion of a range of issues on this week’s Friday panel, as Orla Vaughan, Brian Meaney and Gabriella Hanrahan joined Pat in studio.

Topics included the ‘unholy row’ over Minister Josepha Madigan’s officiating at a Catholic ceremony when the local priest failed to turn up; a proposed ban on smartphones in schools and decriminalising drugs.

The show opened with a discussion of the controversy surrounding the officiation of Josepha Madigan at a mass last weekend. Morning Focus producer, Fiona McGarry spoke to Fr Tony Flannery from Athenry. He’s a Redemptorist priest who has faced excommunication over his views on the ordination of women as priests.

Then Dep Timmy Dooley joined Pat Flynn in studio to discuss a war of words over the possible re-negotiation of the Confidence and Supply Agreement.

The opening of the new Danu Suite at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL) was the next topic for discussion and Pat spoke with Mary Doyle, Midwifery Practice Development Coordinator.

Derrick Lynch and Eoin Brennan discussed Clare’s prospects in the Munster Senior Hurling Final as excitement builds to fever pitch ahead of Sunday’s game.

There was nostalgia next as the Ennis National School Class of ’67/’68 got set for its reunion. Pat was joined by William Crowley and Michael O’Flanagan and Noel Pyne, a former teacher.

Siobán Mulcahy joined Pat then for her round-up of weekend arts events and then Frank Keane of the Graduate Medical School at UL came in for a chat about a joint project with UHL in Ghana.

The show rounded off with a very special package from Shannon Airport where some children from Chernobyl touched down for a holiday and some TLC in Ireland.
