This Morning Focus began with a look at the excitement building for the Clare v Galway match tomorrow (Saturday 27/07).
First we heard what the streets of Ennis thought of Clare’s prospects. Then we had a number of guests from Killanena, up on the Clare/ Galway border. Cyril Conlon, John Conlon, Donal Tuohy, Shane O’Donnell and Gerry O’Connor represented Clare while Adrian Tuohy and Conor Whelan repped for Galway.

Next Gavin spoke with Junior Minister Pat Breen about the future of the Aughinish Alumina plant outside Foynes. Anxieties had been rising for the plant (and the 680 jobs that come with it) due to the looming threat of a trade war between the US and Europe but it seems that such fears can be put aside as the US President vows to resolve the issue of tariffs on aluminium and steel after talks with President of the EU Commission Jean Claude Junker. Breen has also been in Washington this week as part of the Irish Government’s efforts to specifically safeguard the Aughinish Alumina plant.
Finally, rounding out the hour we had David Fielding, the Flying Display Director for the upcoming Foynes Air Show on the show to talk about the air show and what to expect. Among a number of aircraft and aerial artists attendees can expect the Bloodsworth Barnstorming Bizarre and a supersonic attack aircraft from the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight team, the Saab Viggen or Thunderbolt. The event starts at 12pm in Foynes.
The second hour was time for the Friday Panel. The panel this week included Verena Tarpey of Rape Crisis Midwest, Sharon Cahir of Cahir & Co Solicitors and Brian Meaney, former Green Party member of Clare County Council. The panel had a lot to cover this week as they discussed a Gardaí campaign to curb male violence, the effect of this year’s heatwave on climate change action, whether eircodes are actually useful, Eamon Dunphy’s departure from RTÉ and of course, the big Clare v Galway match.
