Morning Focus Friday 18th July

On Fridays Morning Focus John began the show with a report from Morning Focus Producer Amy Ryan about the crash of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.  298 passengers and crew are believed dead after it crashed in Ukraine yesterday.  It was reportedly hit by a surface-to-air missile.  More than half of those on board were Dutch, 27 were Australian and at least 9 are believed to have been UK citizens.

Up next John spoke to Emma Quinn – National Program Co-Ordinator – ERSI Author of Report “Migrant Access to Social Security and Healthcare: Policies and Practice. This report de-bunks myth that non-nationals claim a disproportionate amount of social welfare. Also on the line John was joined by Orla Ni-Eili – Project co-ordinator Clare Immigrant Support Centre.  Orla welcomed the report and thanked Emma for debunking some common misconceptions. 

Up next we returned to Granobo a small village in Ukraine 40km from the Russian border where a Malaysian Airlines flight crashed yesterday after it was hot down.   Daniel McLaughlin – Irish Times Correspondent spoke to John from the crash scene.  He described the horrific scene in front of him. 

A twice-nominated Turner Prize painter, the Dean of Colombia University's School of Art, a former Danish Minister for Culture and a leading art theorist from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are among a host of international art experts gathering in County Clare to take part in a programme of events marking the 20th anniversary of Burren College of Art.  John spoke to Mary Hawkes Greene – President and Founder of the Burren College of Art about the festivities taking place and what is ahead for the Burren College of Art. 

Next John spoke to Kate Mc Glennon who is representing Clare in the Miss Ireland contest on Saturday night. The young Ennistymon woman has just completed her second year of Midwifery studies in Dundalk and was first runner up in the Miss Sunday World Contest 2013.  She discussed her ambitions and the competition with John. 

Morning Focus then took a quick look at whats happening around the county this weekend, A great weekend is planed for the Kilmurry Ibrickane Centenary 1914-2014

  • Friday from 5pm to 8.30pm the minor club activities including under age blitzes for Under12s & Under 14s
    Saturday at 12 noon Dromcollogher-Broadford v Kilmurry Ibrickane Under 10s.
  • Saturday from 3pm to 8.30pm the Ladies club activities with the highlight being the first ever senior championship match for Kilmurry Ibrickane Ladies when they will take on West Clare Gaels in the first round on the Clare Senior Club Championship Kilmurry Ibrickane throw in at 3pm.
  • Sunday starting at 1.30pm Senior club activities & open day.  The 1963, 1964 & 1966 Senior Teams, the 1954 & 1964 minors and the 1964 U14 & U16 teams will be honoured.  Re-enactment of 1935 Co. Football final Kilmurry v Quilty
