Morning Focus 30/03/17

On this fast-paced edition of Morning Focus, Gavin found out about the martial art of Taekwon-do as members of the club in Quin dropped in for a chat. They’re raising funds for six of their members who are travelling to European Championships in Bulgaria at Easter. Gavin was joined in studio by Stephen Ryan, Joanna O’Sullivan from Tulla; Alice Larkin from Quin; and Michaela Moriarty from Lissycasey. Listen back here:

Thursday’s Morning Focus opened on a sombre note with a tribute to the late Delia Keary from her aunt Ellie Cooley. It came as Delia was laid to rest today in Crusheen following a tragic accident.

The ongoing crisis within the ranks of An Gárda Síochána continues to dominate the news agenda. Ahead of the appearance of the Gárda Commissioner at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Gavin spoke to one of its members, Ennistymon-based Senator Martin Conway.

The impact of crime on small business was then discussed with Lorraine Higgins, Head of Public Affairs and Communications with Ennis-based Retail Excellence Ireland. Lorraine told Gavin members are increasingly concerned at the fact that parents are using young children to shop-lift.

Dr Máire Finn joined Gavin in studio for her weekly advice slot, Ask the GP.

Caoimhe Guinnane was Gavin’s next guest. She’s the President of the LIT Students’ Union and joined the show to talk about the Union of Students of Ireland (USI) conference in Ennis. Listen back below:

As a protest got underway at Dáil Éireann over the government’s failure to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Gavin was joined by activist Dermot Hayes.

The actor Diarmuid de Faoite, an Ennis native, joined Gavin in studio to discuss his new translation of the short story collection ‘Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach’ by Padraic Ó Conaire.

Gavin’s next guests were Megan McLaughlin a Leaving Cert student at Colaiste Mhuire and member of Clare Youth Theatre (CYT), and Eleanor Feely, CYT’s Artistic Director. Megan and Maya Stevens have adapted the novel ‘Ballet Shoes’ and will stage it at glór on Sunday (April 2) at 7pm. Listen back below:
