Morning Focus opened with a conversation with Clare Minister for State for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen, on the topic of the leadership of Fine Gael now that Enda Kenny has said he’ll deal with the issue when he returns from the White House in mid-March.

The topic of new penalties for motorists who don’t give cyclists a sufficiently wide berth was discussed with Sgt John Moloney of the Clare Cycle Safety Initiative.

Talk then turned to the financial situation at Bus Éireann with Cllr Tony O’Brien, a member of the NBRU and Lorraine Higgins of Retail Excellence Ireland who fears the impact of a strike on retail businesses.

The sad news of famine in Sudan and other areas of the developing world was discussed with Kilmaley native and Director of Trocaire, Eamonn Meehan.

Gavin then spoke with Robert Frost, the O’Callaghan’s Mills clubman in contention to head up the GAA.

Pay rates in Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) was then discussed with Patrician Callan of the Small Firms Association (SFA).

Ahead of the presentation of the Clare Person of the Year Award to the late Caitríona Lucas, Gavin was joined in studio by her sister, Bríd Deely and Gerry O’Reilly of the Clare Association.

The talk then turned to Famine commemorations with Dr Ciarán Ó Murchadha, a noted Ennis-based historian.

The show rounded off with a chat with Peter Philips organiser of TedFest, celebrating a decade.
