Morning Focus – 08/11/18

Morning Focus began today with Independent Cllr Ann Norton who spoke about this winter’s trolley crisis which is crippling hospitals across the country particularly University Hospital Limerick.

Peter Casey has pledged to put Ann on the Council of State. The IMO says overcrowding is down to capacity and resources.

Michael Guilfoyle, Former member of Ennis Town Council joined us to discuss whether we are we paying too much for non-alcoholic lager. He was shocked to pay €9 for a non-alcoholic beer in Ennis last Saturday night.

Clare FM reporter Ryan Hanton took to the streets of Ennis to find out what the local people think of the new ‘plogging’ phenomenon. Plogging is the new trendy physical activity which has swept the world in recent times and is a combination of jogging and picking up litter. It first became popular in Sweden in 2016. We also heard from Cormac McCarthy, Ennis Tidy Towns about his opinion on ‘plogging.’

Ryan also did a vox-pop with a number of local businesses to find out how trade is going for the town of Ennis in the run-up to the festive season.

In the second hour of Morning Focus we have our regular segment ‘Parenting Advice’ with Dr Toby Sachsenmaier. This week Dr Toby discussed disabilities and children. An information evening for young people with a disability and their families will take place tonight (November 8) between 5-8pm in the Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis.

Padraig O’Flaherty, Group Programme Director, Clare FM provided us with a tribute to the late musician and composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin who passed away at the age of 67. Mícheál was Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Limerick and founder and director at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance.

Ed Farnan, Trump supporter and political commentator, Irish Central disected what lessons can be learned from the results of the US Midterm Elections. Michael feels that in order to help curb the scourge of drink-driving, more should be done to facilitate those going alcohol-free on a night out.

After that, Allen Foster, Researcher, writer and freelance journalist told us all about his new book ‘Foster’s Book of Irish Murders’ which sheds a light on the notorious Clare murders. One of the the cases is about a Clare murder which he describes as one of “the strangest, most sinister and notorious crimes.” An American woman, Maria Domenech was found washed up on Trath Leathan in Doolin in 1967.

In the final hour of the show Dr Keir McNamara, Clare Peace Park and Joe Power, Historian and Author ‘Clare and the Great War’ were live in studio to inform us about the upcoming World War One commemorations in Clare. 700 people from Clare died in WWI and this Sunday (Nov 11) marks the 100th anniversary of the end of one of the bloodiest conflicts the world has ever seen. It is believed that Kilrush supplied more soldiers to the armed forces in WW1 than any other town of its size in Ireland or Britain.

Then, acclaimed Clare fiddle player Martin Hayes joined us to pay tribute to the fantastic musician that was the late Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. In My Own Words, presented by Dr. Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin will be aired in tribute to him, on Clare FM this Sunday from 5pm.
