Morning Focus – 08/10/18

Morning Focus kicked off this morning with Fianna Fáil Cllr Alan O’Callaghan on concerns at resourcing of Clare drugs unit. 

Only four Gardaí in the Clare Division work full-time in the county’s Drugs Unit which is the lowest in the country.

Fine Gael Cllr John Flynn spoke about Clare businesses paying the highest rates levels in Ireland. A new IBEC study has revealed that Clare County Council is more reliant on rates for its income than the majority of local authorities.

Eugene Drennan, Spa Transport was on the line to talk possible strike action over the fuel price equalisation threat. With Budget 2019 arriving tomorrow there have been signs that diesel will increase significantly in price.

The second hour began with our regular segment ‘Garda Focus’ with Clare Crime Prevention Officer, Sgt Tríona O’Rourke.

Cllr and Mayor of Ennis, Clare Colleran Molloy informed us about the latest initiative for slowing down motorists in housing estates which is being piloted at An tSean Dún, Roslevan. It involves residents of the housing estate placing life-size pictures of children on their wheelie bins to evoke an emotional reaction from the drivers and force them to slow down as a result.

In the final hour of Morning Focus we had the ‘Monday Sports Panel’ with Clare FM’s Head of Sport Derrick Lynch. They discussed the week’s sporting events and achievements.

The show concluded with Killaloe author David Rice who told us about his new book ‘Corduroy Boy’ which is being hailed as a middle class Angela’s Ashes. The novel is set in an elite Irish boarding school in the 1940s and 50s.
