A Clare academic has labelled the explosion of a dam in Russia-controlled Ukraine as a “major disaster”.
Water levels are expected to peak later today in Kherson, after the dam in the town of Nova Kakhovka was breached.
At least seven people are feared missing following the explosion, with 42,000 people across 14 communities at risk of flooding. Some people awaiting rescue in affected areas were forced to spend the night on rooftops or in trees because of floodwaters.
The Geneva Convention specifically outlaws attacks on dams, due to the adverse effect they have on the civilian population.
Associate Professor of Politics at DCU, Newmarket on Fergus native, Donncha Ó Beacháin says the flooding will have a devastating impact on surrounding communities.
