The CEO of UL Hospital’s Group has admitted that no amount of work on the ground can address the “fundamental shortfall in acute bed capacity in the MidWest”.
Responding to reports of a breakdown in the bed management system at University Hospital Limerick, Colette Cowan has said in correspondence that a team from the HSE, ULHG and MidWest Community Healthcare is currently being established to tackle the chronic level of overcrowding at the Dooradoyle facility.
The group has also commissioned Deloitte to conduct an external review of patient flow at the hospital, however it acknowledges that no measure will have a significant impact until historic bed shortages are dealt with.
Member of the HSE’s Regional Health Forum West, Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard insists the root of the problem needs to be addressed.
