American Airlines is set to resume its transatlantic services at Shannon Airport.
It comes as the Tanaiste has insisted the Government is willing to ‘put money on the table’ to incentivise airlines to restore routes lost in the Midwest due to the pandemic.
American Airlines’ transatlantic route from Shannon to the city of Philadelphia had traditionally operated seasonally, between May and October every year, until the onset of the pandemic.
The airline has told Clare FM in a statement that it’s ‘already selling tickets’ for the resumption of the route, with the first flight of the season taking to the skies on Monday, May 9th, 2022.
It follows United Airlines’ confirmation last week that it’s currently scheduled to resume its transatlantic service to Newark in March of next year.
The intention of both airlines to resume connectivity in Shannon is set to be another welcome boost to both travel and tourism operators in the region, as well as those relying on the traffic for business purposes.
Delta Airlines says it has ‘nothing to share’ regarding a service restart date to Shannon at this time.
Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has told Clare FM its schedule ‘remains under constant review’ for the rest of 2021 ‘and beyond’.
All of the airline’s transatlantic activity in Shannon has been curbed since the pandemic, though it says ‘all factors’ are to be taken into account in its review, including the recent announcement of fully vaccinated EU citizens being permitted to travel to the US from November.
Responding to Limerick Fine Gael TD Kieran O Donnell in the Dail, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar insists the Government is willing to put its money where its mouth is in restoring routes lost due to the pandemic.
