Government accused of failing to address Clare unemployment level

It's claimed that the government is focussing on austerity rather than stimulation, even though unemployment remains on the rise in Clare.

It comes after new CSO figures released yesterday show that the dole queues grew for the fourth successive month in January, and that almost 10,500 people are now seeking benefits in the county.

Clare Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley is accusing the government of not treating job creation as the key priority that it should be.

Clare's dole queues have risen for a fourth sucessive month - despite ongoing falls nationally.

New CSO figures show an extra 77 people signed on in January bringing the total number of people seeking some form of job seekers benifit at 10, 445.

The biggest hike was in Ennis - its up by 93, while Ennistymon and Tulla rose by 16 and 1 respectively- and there was a slight drop in the numbers at the social welfare office in Kilrush

Taoiseach seeks AG advice on fiscal treaty

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny will this morning formally ask the Attorney General for advice on whether Ireland should hold a referendum on the new EU fiscal treaty.

The deal finalised in Brussels last night aims to impose German-style budget discipline on all EU member states.

Opposition parties want the government to give people their say by holding a referendum.

But last night the Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the government would only put the treaty to a vote - if the attorney general advises that it's necessary.

Jobs boost in Dublin

Over 800 jobs are being created at a new Sky customer centre in Dublin.

The digital TV provider is opening the facility at the Burlington Plaza - and the jobs will be rolled out over the next two years.

The positions will be in customer service, coaching and HR.

EU Leaders gear up for Fiscal Summit

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny joins EU leaders in Brussels today for a summit aimed at finalising a new treaty to bring an end to the financial chaos that has dogged the Eurozone.

The agreed wording of the treaty will determine whether or not there will have to be a referendum in Ireland to agree on it.

A poll out at the weekend showed that nearly three quarters of Irish people believe the new fiscal pact should be put to a vote.

Ennis misses out on Fleadh

Ennis has missed out on hosting next year's fleadh,after Derry was announced as the host for the 2013 event..

The traditional music festival normally attracts three hundred thousand visitors and is worth 40 million euros in revenue to the hosts.

It'll be the first time in 60 years that the Fleadh will go north of the border.

Ennis will find out today if its bid to host the 2013 All Ireland Fleadh has been sucessful, however the "favourite" to stage the event is now back in the running.

Clare County Town along with Sligo and Derry had all applied to hold the event next year, with the northern city viewed as the front runner.

The Ulster Council then rejected Derry's bid last weekend but has since reversed its decision not to endorse the submission ollowing a meeting of senior officers on Tuesday night.

Taoiseach under fire over Davos comments

Fine Gael is facing a public backlash after the Taoiseach yesterday blamed Ireland's spectacular economic crash on a 'mad' borrowing frenzy.

The Taoiseach was responding to questions at the World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland.

The comments come weeks after his address to the nation in which he said -' you are not responsible for this mess'.

Opposition parties have sorely criticised the Taoiseach's characterisation of the financial collapse as being down to greed on the part of the Irish people.

Avocent Job Losses

The Shannon region's been hit by another jobs blow.

IT firm Avocent has confirmed its seeking over a dozen redundancies from its operations in the Shannon Free Zone.

In a statement to Clare FM the US Multinational, which employs 105 staff at its base in the county says its informed workers of plans for a collective redundancy in its Operations and Sales departments.

Its set to affect 13 staff , effective immediately.

1.2 billion paid out to bond holders today

Unsecured bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank will today be paid back 1-point-2 billion euro.

The pay-out comes despite calls on the government from the opposition not to honour the debt.

The Taoiseach said yesterday he had no intention of defaulting on payments to bondholders - as it would put Ireland on the same footing as Greece.

During a debate in the Dáil last night, opposition politicians urged the government not to honour unsecured debts at the failed bank.
