Two men charged in connection with Kenny death

Two men have appeared in court charged in connection with the death of Galway Publican John Kenny.

 36-year old Marian Lingurar, who is from Romania, was arrested in Cork last night along with a 17-year-old youth who cannot be identified.

They appeared before Galway District Court today charged in connection with the killing of the 56 year old father of one at the family pub in Oughterard.

They were also charged with the withholding of information and have been remanded in custody.

Kilrush gardai investigate after pig's head posted to Garda in Clare

Kilrush gardai have confirmed they're investigating an incident where a local officer was sent a pigs head in
the post.

The package, containing the animinal's head  was sent by registered post to the garda home address in the past few days.

The individual in question is understood to be heavily involved in community work in West Clare and is highly regarded in the local community.

Day two of Egyptian Protests

Large scale protests are expected in the Egyptian capital of Cairo again today - as a rally against the military-led government runs into a second day.

The demonstrations have spread to other cities as well - two protesters were shot dead by police in the city of Suez - while 74 people died during riots at a football match in Port Said earlier in the week.
 

Probe after Clare Garda sent pigs head

It's reported a garda investigation's underway after an officer - based in west Clare was sent a pig's head in the post.

According to today Irish Independent the garda received it by registered post in the past few days.

The individual in question is understood to be heavily involved in community work in the region where he works in west Clare and is well regarded of by the community he serves.

Senior officers are now attempting to establish who sent the package.

Judgement in Stokes School Case

A judgement will be delivered later in a landmark case of a Traveller boy's right to attend a local secondary school.

John Stokes who's from a Traveller family, was refused admission to the Christian Brothers High School in 2010 having failed on priority grounds and later missing out on an admissions lottery.

John's Mother Mary lodged a complaint with the Equality Tribunal who found in John's favour and granted him a place.

Over 70 killed at Egyptian Premier League Football Match

The Egyptian parliament will convene an emergency meeting today, after violence at a soccer match in the city of Port Said  killed more than 70 people yesterday.

Around 300 other people were injured when fans invaded the pitch, seconds after the game between between two of the country's top teams

They threw rocks, bottles and fireworks and even attacked players while gunfire was also reported on the main road leading to Port Said from Cairo, and troops were deployed to prevent further clashes.

Gardaí investigate fatal Dublin shooting

A man's been shot dead in Dublin.

It happened at a pub in Finglas at about five past one this morning.

A man armed with a gun approached the victim and shot him a number of times in the head.

The victim was taken to James Connolly Memorial hospital in Blanchardstown where he was pronounced dead.

The scene of the shooting has been sealed off for a technical examination, and a post mortem's expected to take place on his remains today.

 

Website accused of defamation is closed by judge

A website operated by a Newmarket on Fergus man has been ordered to shut down by a judge who also said lawmakers should think about making it illegal to post "patently untrue allegations on the net.

Mr Justice Michael Peart was speaking after he granted Damien Tansey various orders, effectively ending the operation of the website www.rate-your-solicitor.com.

The Sligo-based solicitor brought defamation proceedings to the High Court arising out of comments on the website.

Garda Ombudsman investigates Newport Shooting

The Garda Ombudsman is investigating an incident in Newport in which a man died, moments after firing shots at members of the gardaí .

It happened during a routine gardaí  patrol outside the Tipperary village shortly after 7.30 last night.

Officers signalled for the man to stop his vehicle but as they approached, he produced a shotgun and during a subsequent struggle with the gardaí , several shots were fired.

Gardaí identify woman's body found in a suitcase

 

Gardaí investigating the discovery of a young woman's body in a suitcase in Dublin yesterday are trawling CC TV footage to establish when it was dumped there.

They have established that the 26 year old victim who was from Malawi  had been studying in Ireland for the past two years

She'd been living in Rathmines.
