There's broad welcome to new Aer Arann services from Shannon Airport.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar says the new Shannon to Rennes in Northern France Route is good news for Irish tourism and business, opening up new services from the Mid-West to France.

Aer Arann is also to increase the frequency of its flights from Shannon to Edinburgh and with a second plane to be based at the airport, an extra 20 airline staff will also operate here in Clare.

Shannon Development's Tourism Manager Pat Daly says it's a positive start for 2012

.

It follows calls for an extension of the public consultation scheme from locals in Parteen, Clonlara and Ardnacrusha who are opposed to the new road.

The Council was giving people until the 16th of January to make submissions, but the deadline has now been extended until February 12th.

Criticism as funding granted to Northern Distributor road project

There are calls for the half a million euro allocated to the proposed Limerick Northern Distributor Road Project to immediately redirected for use on existing routes in South East Clare.

Local representatives, who are opposed to the road project believe the money would be better spent in other areas than on a development they describe as aspirational and unnecessary.

Road Users Weather Warning

Road users are being warned to take extra care on the roads this week as temperatures fall here, as they are across Europe.

Ireland won't be as badly affected by the cold front coming in from Siberia as parts of central Europe are - dozens of people there have died as a results of the freezing conditions.

However, Met Éireann has predicted that temperatures will continue to fall as the week goes on - and falls of sleet and snow are expected.

Calls for Motorway Use Education Campaigns

The government's being warned parts of the Ennis to Limerick Motorway pose a major safety risk after another motorist ended up driving on the wrong side of the road.

An elderly man who was picking up a relative from Shannon was stopped on the M18 on Friday night last, having travelled over 10km from Drumline towards Limerick on the wrong carriageway.

The man was eventually stopped by Gardaí on safety patrol.

West on Track seeks independent probe into line's viability

Campaigners for the Ennis-Galway rail-line are calling for an independent enquiry to be carried out into the operation of the route.

It follows an emergency meeting of the western Inter-county Rail committee into a recent Prime Time Report questioned the viability of the route.

However supporters of the service says the figures quoted were inaccurate, and claim it has been undermined by Iarnrod Eireann who do not offer an intercity service on the line, while the Transport Minister also questioned the figures.

The proposed development of Shannon Airport as a international humanitarian hub has moved another step closer.

Tenders are now being sought for a feasibility study on the viability of making the Mid West Airport a base for the storage and distribution of humanitarian aid and how such a project could be developed.

Its all part of the programme for government pledged by several Mid West Fine Gael and Labour TDs before the last General Election.

Minister insists rail stop at Crusheen will happen

The Transport Minister insists the development of a rail stop at Crusheen is still on track, but construction could still be a year away.

It comes amid fears that the project has stalled again as Iranrod Eireann remains in negotiations with a third party developer over funding contributions.

Planning permission was granted for the new station on the Ennis to Galway route last June, but work has yet to commence.

The delay over Crusheen comes as Irish Rail conceeds passenger numbers on Clare Galway rail line are lower than forcast.

Varadkar defends decision to Shannon Airport Board

The Transport Minister has defended his decision to reduce the board of Shannon Airport down to two members, saying the previous board had no power or control.

The board was reduced by seven members to include the Acting Airport Manager at Shannon and the Dublin Airport Authority's Chief Financial Officer, and though the Minister is to appoint a third member within weeks, he's told Clare FM it's only an interim measure.

Further delay for Crusheen Rail Stop

The development of the Crusheen Rail stop has hit another snag.

Planning permission was granted for the new station at along the Ennis to Athenry route last June, but work has yet to commence and its reported that Iarnród Éireann is still negotiating with a third-party developer.

The delay in providing the Crusheen stop comes against the background of Iarnród Éireann conceding the passenger numbers on the Western Rail Corridor are lower than forecast in the business sector.
