Meelick GAA:

Truagh Clonlara 2-11 Sixmilebridge 2-10

Truagh edged out Sixmilebridge by the minimum in an exciting Senior Championship encounter in Meelick on Monday evening. It was a close game throughout with Sixmilebridge first on scoresheet with a free from Chloe Morey. Ellen Horgan followed up with a point to get Truaghs first score. Aine O’Loughlin, only recently back from injury, got the first goal of the four that would be scored on the evening to put Truagh ahead. The teams traded scores in the middle part of the half, four fine points from play the duo of Laura Foley and Hannah Horgan saw them get their names on Truagh’s scoresheet. Morey added a free to close the gap but a fortuitous goal from Kathleen Horgan put Truagh back in control. Perhaps relaxed a little with their lead Truagh then conceded 1-2, Carroll with her first green flag following an inch perfect pass from Maire McGrath in the build up before O’Loughlin and Foley added points to return Truagh’s lead to two points. Sixmilebridge got the last score of the half to put them behind by the minimum 2-5 to 1-7.
That one point lead was to prove vital for Truagh in the dying minutes but was preceded by another exciting half of Camogie. Truagh started the strongest with Ellen Horgan and Foley stretching the lead. Morey and Truaghs Michelle Caulfield exchanged points. Sixmilebridge and Sarah Sherlock again exchanged points before Foley and Roisin Begley added two unanswered points for Truagh. The gap was at five points but Sixmilebridge finished strongly adding a point from play and the Briudges second goal from Carroll in the dying seconds after a series of good saves from Truagh goalie Aideen Hogg. Truagh pucked the ball out and the referee blew the final whistle much to the relief of Truagh as they held out for a one point win, 2-11 to 2-10.

Gurteen:

Sixmilebridge 4-9 Clooney Quin 1-18

The adage of goals win games might normally ring true but on Saturday evening in Gurteen, four green flags throughout an exhilarating game of Camogie was not enough for Sixmilebridge to take the points. The fighting spirit of the girls in the green and red shown through as they came back from a 12 point deficit to share the spoils with the Bridge.

Clooney Quin got off to an ideal start, Deirdre Murphy was first to score when she converted a free. Orlaith Duggan added a brace before Naomi Carroll pointed after a pass from Chloe Morey. Murphy added another free before Aiveen O’Shea rattled the net for the first goal of the game, a timely pull from a blocked Carroll shot, which saw the sides level. The Bridge went ahead when Morey converted a long range free from inside her own half. Morey added from play to extend the Bridges lead to two while at the other end Clooney Quin were wide of the posts. Carroll was proving a threat up front for the Bridge, her darting runs through the Clooney Quin defence as she raided for further green flags. Morey added a free in the 24thminute and with the game in jury time Carroll was finally rewarded when she broke through for her sides second goal. Morey and Sarah Costelloe traded points just before the half time whistle, to leave the Bridge ahead 2-5 to 0-6.

The Bridge started the second half as they had finished the first, a Morey free had the distance and when the Bridge woman won the puckout from that score, she went on the run before passing to Carroll who secured her third green flag of the game. A brace of points from Murphy pulled two points back for Clooney Quin. The Bridge further extended their lead when a McGrath free down to the wing was gathered by Mary O’Connor who passed to the oncoming Olivia Phelan who raised a fourth green flag for the Bridge. Clooney Quin added a brace of points, a Murphy free followed by a well struck effort from Ciara Grogan, just before Morey converted a brace of frees to have the Bridge ahead by twelve points 4-8 to 0-10 with twelve minutes played in the second half. However the changes by the Clooney management,, Mary Clune moved to full forward, Orlaith Duggan to centreback and Grogan to mid field started to pay dividends for the mid Clare outfit as the fought their way back into this game and would dominate proceedings for the remainder of the half. A brace from Murphy started the turn for Clooney Quin, and when the veteran player struck a 30 yard free low and hard, Aine McNamara got in the block only for Murphy to strike the rebound to the net. Four further unanswered points from Murphy and suddenly the Bridges lead was r3educed to the minimum. Siobhan Lees shot with three minutes remaining was firstly called as a goal before being amended to a point to level the sides 4-8 to 1-17. Costelloe pointed for Clooney Quin on the sixtieth minute to put them back in front however the Bridge who hadn’t scored with twenty minutes went on the attack, with Carroll finishing over the bar to again level the sides. The Bridge had one last attack only to see their effort drift wide of the upright, leaving the sides to share the spoils 4-9 to 1-18.

Shannon Camogie:

Newmarket on Fergus 2-21 St Josephs 0-6

The winning margin did not appear likely in the first 20 minutes of Round 2 Senior Camogie Championship in Shannon Camogie pitch on Saturday evening, with the teams exchanging points on numerous occasions.
However, from here on Newmarket on Fergus took a grip and this grip got stronger as the game progressed. They played very well as a unit, and were the better team on the day.  St. Joseph’s had a couple of players who were playing at senior level for the first time and did quite well.
St. Joseph’s opened the scoring inside the first minute when Erin Hennessy pointed but Sharon McMahon levelled a minute later. It was nip and tuck for the next 20 minutes, with both sides exchanging points before Rachel Kelleher struck for goal for Newmarket on Fergus to go six points clear with ten minutes of the half remaining. Six further points from Rachel Kelleher (2), Laura McMahon (1), and Aine O’Brien (1), had the winners 1-11 to 0-3 in front at the interval.
Newmarket on Fergus piled on the pressure in the opening five minutes of the second half scoring 1-3 without reply. Eimear Casey and Erin Hennessy added two points for the parish midway through the half. It was 2-14 to 0-5 going into the final quarter stage. Newmarket on Fergus Nicki Kaiser, Rachel Kelleher and Ann Marie Hayes added three further points before Erin Hennessy replied with a pointed free. With five minutes remaining Aine O’Brien tagged on three points for the Blues to seal a comfortable win. Strong performances on the day for the parish from Capt. Intermediate Championship

Broadford 2-06 Éire Óg 4-13

Broadford hosted Éire Óg on Sunday evening for round 2 of the intermediate championship. Despite the humid, uncomfortable conditions, both sets of supporters were treated to a really entertaining display.

Éire Óg were seeking to add to their round 1 victory over Corofin while Broadford were on the hunt for their first championship points,  having lost out to Clarecastle/Ballyea in the opening round.

The visitors raced into an early 1-02 lead before Broadford struck for goal, narrowing the gap to just two points. Éire Óg responded well and clawed back two points from play. The sides exchanged points, while Broadford were unlucky to see their shot on goal spurned by a great save from Katie Malone. The subsequent ’45 was converted but it was Éire Óg that finished the half strongly, adding a second goal and another four points to their tally. The east Clare side pointed from a placed ball just before the break, leaving the half time score at 2-09 to 1-03.

The second half was only 7 minutes old when Broadford had reduced the 9 point deficit to a very manageable 4 points. This was courtesy of a well taken goal and two points, the second being from a ’45 following another excellent save from the Éire Óg goalie. The sides exchanged points once again, but, that point was to be the last for the hosts as two well struck goals settled the Ennis team. They finished the second half as strongly as the first, adding another 3 points to the scoreboard, leaving the final score at 4.13 to 2-06.

Eire Og 6-12 Feakle/Killanena 2-12

Clonroadmore was the venue for the Intermediate Championship tie between Éire Óg and Feakle/Killanena on Saturday evening. The same tie in Championship 2016 ended in a draw so both sides were adamant to go a step further this time round. The home side were seeking to add to their two wins while this was the first Championship outing for the East Clare side. In the end, Éire Óg came out on top on a scoreline of 6-12 to 2-12. The match was hard fought with both sides enjoying periods of dominance.  Éire Óg raced into an early 1-05 to 1 point lead courtesy of a Maria Redmond goal and points from Elizabeth Russell, Orla Devitt and Grainne Nolan punctuated by a pointed ’45 from Regan Conway following a point blank save from the townies netminder, Elaine Walsh. The combo clawed back 4 unanswered points which Orla Devitt replied to with a point but Feakle/Killanena broke through the Éire Óg defences, scoring an excellent goal to put the minimum between the sides. As half time approached, it was Éire Óg that finished strongly, adding a tally of 2-02 from play, giving them a 9 point half time cushion.

The visitors were first to get the scoreboard ticking over with Regan Conway pointing from a placed ball. The townies reacted well, as Elana Bradley and Sarah Redmond raised another two green flags. Feakle/ Killanena picked off three points in a row, while Elana Bradley replied with her second goal of the evening. In spite of this, the visitors dug in and put over the next two scores. They were handed a lifeline as they were awarded a penalty which they duly scored and were unlucky to see another shot on goal put out for a ’45. The resultant point put nine points between the sides with just 6 minutes on the clock. Éire Óg well though as Grainne Nolan put over the last three points of the match. Final score Éire Óg 6-12 Feakle Killanena 2-12.
