Tony Griffin announces retirement from Clare intercounty hurling.

Tony Griffin has announced his retirement from intercounty hurling on the eve  of a meeting between the 2009 hurling panel and the Clare county board.

The Ballyea man revealed in an interview in today’s Sunday Tribune that he will not be making himself available for the 2010 season and intends to focus on his business career instead.

Clare’s last All star award winner in 2006 says he has lost his enjoyment of the game and that this years championship left him feeling drained and uninspired.

The shock announcemnt comes on the day that players and the county board are due to have showdown talks regarding the current issues surrounding Clare hurling.

The players held a  meeting last Thursday night,attended by 24 members of the panel, where 23 of the 24 detailed his grievences with the 2009 management set up.

Tonight’s meeting  comes following Tuesday’s nights county board meeting where Mike Mc Namara was fully backed by the county board and delegates to continue as Clare hurling boss.
