Clare steadied the ship though, with scores from Aaron Cunningham, John Conlon, David Reidy, Podge Collins and Cathal McInerney seeing them lead 0-11 to 0-8 approaching half time.

Tipp got the last two scores of the half to leave just the minimum between them at the break.

Led by Noel and John McGrath, the All Ireland champions dominated the second period, and even though Clare cut the gap to just three in the closing stages, the home side were always comfortable in sealing the 7 point win.

Elsewhere in Division 1A today, Kilkenny got off the mark, beating Cork by 0-22 to 0-15.
In Division 1B, Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford had a 3-18 to 0-12 win over Kerry while Galway beat Laois 3-31 to 1-11.
