New Football Rules To Be Trialled While Second Tier Championship Moves Closer

A second-tier football championship has moved a step closer today.

The possible creation of a competition below the Sam Maguire will be further discussed at a meeting in January ahead of a motion going before GAA Congress in February.

The Association says there was ‘broad support’ for the introduction of a second-tier championship at today’s Ard Chomhairle meeting at Croke Park.

Experimental playing rule changes, including the restricted use of the hand-pass, the ‘sin bin’ and advanced mark have all been approved for trial in next season’s Allianz Football Leagues and pre-season provincial competitions.

The provincial champions will now have home advantage in the first phase of games in the Super 8s with phase 2 matches to be played at Croke Park.
