Lucky escape for Ireland while change of venue for ladies football game

Ireland have had a narrow escape in Rome thanks to Ronan O’ Gara.

Two penalties from Mirco Bergamasco and one back from Jonathan Sexton left it at 6-3 to the Italians after an underwhelming first half.

But Captain Brian O’ Driscoll got over the line minutes into the second to make it 10-6 to Ireland after Sexton converted.

Italy then scored a try of their own through Luke McClean but crucially the conversion was wide of the post.

O’ Gara, who had come on in the second half for Jonathan Sexton then stepped up to spare Ireland’s blushes with a late drop goal to win the match.

In football, it’s been a record-breaking day in the Premier League, with the
most amount of goals scored in one day.

Among them, Arsenal threw away a 4 goal lead in drawing 4-4 at Newcastle.

Fellow title contenders Manchester City beat West Brom 3-0.

Everton got past Blackpool 5-3, while Wigan beat Blackburn 4-3.

In local soccer news and all of Sunday’s local soccer action has been postponed due to the weather.

In GAA, Waterford have defeated Cork by 21 points to 16 to win the Waterford Crystal Cup final.

While the Walsh Shield final between Carlow and Offaly had to be abandoned in extra time due to a serious injury.

Also Sunday’s  national ladies football league opener between Clare and Down has been moved from Cooraclare to Miltown with throw in at 2pm.
