Ennis Man Rhys Williams Takes FEI Jumping Ponies Trophy

A young Ennis man has been crowned world champion at the FEI Jumping Ponies Trophy competition in Belgium.

15-year-old Rhys Williams romped to victory ahead of compatriots Alex Finney in runner-up spot and John McEntee in third, in an all Irish winning trio.

His victory marks the third consecutive year that Ireland has won the prestigious title and adds to Rhys’ already impressive collection of prizes.

Last year saw him take the U14 individual gold and team silver at the 2018 European Youth Championships while just last September, he was named under 16 Grand Prix winner at the FEI Nations Cup World Series Youth Equestrian Finals.

Rhys has been speaking to Clare FM’s James Mulhall, where firstly he explained how this latest competition works and then what his goals for next year are.
